“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in life. And I am horribly limited.” --Sylvia Plath

music & poetry & VCFA update

Summer residency is quickly heading toward its bittersweet end.... Today is a low-key day in terms of scheduled readings and lectures... All that's on my schedule today is lunch with my advisor and a reading. The afternoon of the fourth is always like "the weekend" -- there's the prose v. poets softball game, and a catered picnic, and the talent show.... basically everyone is encouraged to take the afternoon and evening off. I don't think anyone needs much encouraging!

Last night was the graduation dance party, which was much needed. After being in my head so damn much, I was craving some loud music and an opportunity to MOVE MY BODY. So fun. I miss my speakers at home.

A friend shared this song with me the other day. I'm hooked:

Do you remember the late morning
when we went back to bed,
when we found the first position
and every muscle rested

I do remember that I already knew
it was the last time,
the last time for first positions
the last time you'll be mine

Aaaaoo aoo aoo ao
Aaaaoo aoo aoo ao

Do you remember the scars I showed you
the stories I told you
how I always said forever
when you aksed me to stay true

do you remember when we forgot
how to smile at each other
to believe that the other
wants only whats good for you

Do you remember the late morning
when we went back to bed,
when we found the first position
and every muscle rested

I do remember that I already knew
it was the last time,
the last time for first positions
the last time you'll be mine

And here's the poem I'm especially loving today, "Inside Out" by Diane Wakowski

I walk the purple carpet into your eye
carrying the silver butter server
but a truck rumbles by,
leaving its black tire prints on my foot
and old images          the sound of banging screen doors on hot
afternoons and a fly buzzing over the Kool-Aid spilled on
             the sink
flicker, as reflections on the metal surface.

Come in, you said,
inside your paintings, inside the blood factory, inside the
old songs that line your hands, inside
eyes that change like a snowflake every second,
inside spinach leaves holding that one piece of gravel,
inside the whiskers of a cat,
inside your old hat, and most of all inside your mouth where you
grind the pigments with your teeth, painting
with a broken bottle on the floor, and painting
with an ostrich feather on the moon that rolls out of my mouth.

You cannot let me walk inside you too long inside
the veins where my small feet touch
bottom.
You must reach inside and pull me
like a silver bullet
from your arm.

eco- & wallet-friendly party time!

Today is Evelyn's 3rd birthday, which, for me, is the best day of the whole year. More exciting than Christmas and far better than my own birthday, today is all about my favorite girl, Evelyn Jane. And it's officially summer, and I couldn't be happier about today's weather forecast: 77 and bright blue sunny skies, my favorite kind of day and exactly what I'd hoped for for today.

I LOVE throwing parties. I love planning them, decorating them, and hosting them, yet it's something I don't get to do all that often because we just usually don't have that much time for planned parties. At this age we're still having just a family party (once she attends school I'm sure that will change), and we're so excited!

When I plan and decorate for a party I'm huge on being as eco- and wallet-friendly as possible, which is actually part of the fun. To make our modest living space a bit more festive, we put the leaf in the table and I covered it with a large white lace piece of fabric, which works perfectly as a table cloth when I tie up the ends. This is something I picked up at the thrift store last year for a couple bucks.

Using some of that same fabric and some hemp rope that I've had forever, I made a bunting to hang across our sliding glass doors. I also have these great handmade pinwheels that I got from someone who'd used them for her wedding. She didn't know what to do with them, and didn't want to throw them out, so I said I'd take them. There are quite a few pinwheels so I cut some of them into small triangles that I also added to the bunting.

On our walk yesterday, Evelyn and I picked wildflowers and daisies from throughout the neighborhood (but only the ones that grow close to the road and in bushes where people wouldn't miss them/notice I was taking them!). I have tons of old spaghetti sauce and jam jars that I use for vases, and, to tie in with the bunting, I wrapped the faces with old lace and hemp, and added a cut-out triangle....

I also baked some DELICIOUS lemon bars (I had to taste them!) and this awesome vegan cocoa cake.

And I refuse to use paper plates, so I'm making sure all the dishes are clean, and Evelyn's grandma is bringing a few extra plates and forks just in case we need them.

And I almost forgot--the Thank You cards! The other week Evelyn and I did a mini photo shoot outside, and I asked her to hold a thank you sign I'd made (with black marker and part of a paper grocery bag. I may have bribed her with chocolate.) I ordered wallet-size photos (along with a client's order so I didn't pay additional shipping), and used photo corners to stick the photos onto blank cards that I have. They're also serving as table decoration.

Oh, and for the kids I made my own "Pin the Tail on the Monkey" -- which reminds me, I still have to cut out some monkey tails!

I think I'm a party nerd. That's okay with me.

Have you had your coffee?

I haven't, which makes this too much for my brain.

photo diary: ANIMALS! and ice cream!

Today we took Evelyn to the zoo, which she really loved, of course. And so did her parents! We thought going on a weekday would be a good day since it'd hopefully be less crowded.

Wrong.

We pulled up towards the parking lots and saw about 500 yellow school buses. Must have been field trip day or something, because the park was crawling with kids. Screaming kids. Screaming, obnoxious, rude kids. And smelly. Seriously, don't their parents bathe them? Despite the massive crowds I managed to keep my anxiety level in check, Evelyn loved seeing all the animals, and it was fun to take photos of something other than people for a change.

The zoo also has a small amusement park, as well as an historic carousel--built in 1914! Incredible! Imagine all the different kinds of people that have been on this thing... all the different eras, the clothes, the time, the culture... I bet it was a penny a ride back in the day. And the thing is beautiful. All the horses are hand-carved from wood, and while they've re-varnished the horses over the years, they've tried to keep as much of the original paint and everything as they could. Really, really cool. Riding it was enchanting; I forgot about everything.

Oh, and we stopped for ice cream on the way home (which served as dinner since we had a late lunch at THE WORST Olive Garden ever. Seriously. The food wasn't terrible but wow, what a place. More on that later).

Photos! Lots and lots!
