The Big Manager had a pastry crumb on his lower lip. He brushed at it absentmindedly and scoffed at the Little Manager and said, "Humph, well, you coulda bonused nearly six times that much."
“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in life. And I am horribly limited.” --Sylvia Plath

It's Never Enough in the Corporation--Part 2 of a (true) short story
"It's not enough, More More More!" the Big Manager had been yelling at the Little Manager all month long. But the Little Manager must have been doing something right because his latest paycheck was nearly double what it normally was--the Little Manager got a bonus! He smiled to himself and thought, "Yes, this is what I deserve, because I really am doing everything I can." And the next time the Big Manager came to the Little Manager's store, the Little Manager said to him, "You know, I'm pretty happy about that bonus."

ReplyDeleteSarah - My pleasure! I also have that book. I recently re-read (for the 10th time at least) "Trout Fishing in America."
Marcia! the subject of much of what he did. Many people didn't realize the HUGE impact she had on much of what he wrote. Obviously, you do!
Here's one written about her called "Gee, You're So Beautiful That It's Starting To Rain."
Oh, Marcia,
I want your long blonde beauty
to be taught in high school,
so kids will learn that God
lives like music in the skin
and sounds like a sunshine harpsicord.
I want high school report cards
to look like this
